Hurricane Charley~ Around Casselberry

yellowbar

Next, we drove around some other neighborhoods in Casselberry to see how widespread the damage was. Sundown Estates is a more upscale neighborhood located about 1 1/2 miles west of my home. This neighborhood had been built in an area filled with giant old pine trees. One lesson learned this hurricane season is that pine trees generally do not fare well in high winds. This large pine tree came down onto a backyard fence.Sundown Estates
Residents all over the area were outside, staring at the reworked landscape. This giant pine tree narrowly missed a house.Sundown Estates
Other houses in Sundown Estates were not so lucky. This home had no less than three pine trees fall directly onto the roof. A van was also completely buried underneath the tree limbs barely visible directly in the center of this photo.Sundown Estates
This house had a large oak tree fall onto the roof. The home-owners had already placed a blue tarp onto the roof to prevent further damage from afternoon rains.Sundown Estates
We then explored another local trailer park, Lake Katherine Estates. The scene there was similar to that seen in the mobile home community near my house. In addition to damage resulting from fallen trees, the lightweight construction of the mobile homes made them more susceptible to damage from the wind itself. Here, portions of a mobile home's roof lay on the lawn.Mobile Home Damage
This mobile home lost its screened enclosure to the high winds.Mobile Home Damage
Tree debris, mixed with metal sheets torn from the homes, covers a front lawn.Mobile Home Damage
This mobile home's carport was destroyed, landing on the car underneath.Damaged Mobile Home
The owners of this home were fortunate. The large tree on the front lawn fell, but just missed the house.Near Miss
Another near miss...this huge tree was blown over, but came to rest along-side the mobile home, just brushing the house.Near Miss
These folks were not so fortunate. This mobile home lost part of its roof as well as its screened porch. The owners were out front, attempting to clean up the mess.Mobile Home Damage
The entrance to this neighborhood was completely blocked by fallen trees. Notice the power lines caught in the debris.Blocked Road
As the trees fell, they landed on the electric lines, pulling down the power poles.Power Pole
