Hurricane Katrina made landfall over Southern Louisiana on the morning of August 29, 2005 as a Category IV storm with maximum sustained winds of 140mph. A storm surge approaching 30 feet swept over the Mississippi coast, causing massive devastation. The eye of Katrina passed just to the east of New Orleans, sparing the city from receiving the storm's most intense winds.
