The true horror of Hurricane Katrina was the astronomical death toll. By early December, the total number of dead stood at 1,325. Over 1,000 were killed in Louisiana, primarily as a result of the devastasting flood. It was widely believed that, since the satellite age and technology allowing early warnings, large numbers of fatalities from hurricanes were a thing of the past in the United States. No storm since 1928 had a higher death toll, when the Okeechobee Hurricane struck southern Florida, resulting in as many as 2,000 casualties. More than 3 months after Katrina's passage, bodies are still being retrieved along the ravaged Gulf Coast. Many people remain missing and may never be found.
The images on this page are graphic and disturbing. It is not my intent to disrespect those who died in any way by posting these photos. I think it is important however, to show these pictures to reveal the true horror that resulted from Hurricane Katrina.
